American Billy Horschel leads the Open Championship heading into today’s final round after shooting a 69 in horrendous conditions at Royal Troon on Saturday.
English major debutant Dan Brown made the 18th, but a double bogey after finding a greenside bunker saw him join Tristan Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Justin Rose and US PGA champion Xander Schaffel on three over.
Brown’s playing partner today is world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler, who is two under, while Shane Lowry – who led after two rounds – went the wrong way on moving day, slipping down the leaderboard and finishing with a 77. The bottom one. Justin Thomas, Adam Scott and Matthew Jordan are tied for Sunday’s game.

Bob McIntyre admits that Drown brought him back down to earth
MacIntyre said: “A lot of people are struggling this week. After yesterday’s (first) four holes, I thought I’d be sitting on my couch at the Open, not playing golf. It was a big effort last night, coming out today, it just didn’t work out.
“But that’s golf. Last week you were the champion, this week you’re in the pack.

Bob McIntyre admits that Drown brought him back down to earth
The Open-based left-hander celebrated long into the night after winning his home Scottish Open last Sunday, but it was a different story in Ayrshire this week.
After struggling to make the open cut on Friday, the 27-year-old found himself struggling again in the third round, posting a one-over 72 to sit six over.
The back nine was particularly challenging as he recorded three bogeys, although he escaped with a par on the 18th and was then forced to innovate and play the shot right-handed.

Horschel dreams of winning the Open
“I imagine holding that trophy on the 18th, walking out to the crowd and being hailed as the Open champion.
“That’s what I’m going to do again tonight and hopefully tomorrow it will be done.
“If it doesn’t, I’ll be half-hearted again and working hard to get back to something like this.”

Horschel dreams of winning the Open
American Billy Horschel has gone to bed every night this week thinking about winning the Open, but he’s closer than ever to making it a reality after a brutal third day at Royal Troon.
The 37-year-old shot a 69 in the worst of the wind and rain, and despite hitting six at one point and bogey at the last, his four-under total was enough for a one-stroke 54-hole lead.
He benefited from Englishman Dan Brown’s double trip on the 18th to lift him to that level.
“One thing I’ve done this year that I’ve been really good at this week is I find myself holding the cup every night before I go to bed,” the Floridian said. An Anglophile with a penchant for West Ham, darts and cricket.

The Open 2024 Exams
Xander Schauffele Rich Beam’s pick: “He’s got confidence now.”
David Howell agrees, but perhaps goes with the heart: “I agree with Rich, but I think Rose is willing to do it, and I can’t imagine Rose’s life without a jug of claret, so I’ll go with her.”

It’s tradition to buy everyone drinks after a card but Kim doesn’t know that.
“I want to buy Korean barbecue, but it’s not my country, so my team gets fish and chips,” he added.

Yesterday was The Open
Kim’s previous two attempts on the 238-yard final hole resulted in a double bogey and a bogey, but he birdied the 16th and came to the tee, his first since the short par eighth, but seven over for the tournament.
He landed his tee shot short of the green and as it curled it tracked all the way to the hole.
“My caddy said to me ‘You’re going to hit hard with a three-iron’, so I did, and once I made good contact, I thought, ‘That should be within 20 feet,’ and saw the ball over the edge,” he said.
“Then people were yelling at me because I didn’t feel the ball go in. It was amazing. I’ve had a lot of holes in my life, maybe more than 10 times, but I think this was the most memorable hole because it was a big one and The Open and I was tough on the front nine. .
“The last couple of days I felt terrible about my shots (on the hole). I double Thursday and three-putt again yesterday: I finally got a hole-in-one, so I think I like it now.

The Open 2024
30 mph winds around Royal Troon this morning.
You might forget the forecasts, which mostly look like 10-15mph winds, but Sky Sports presenter Henny Jewell has an anemometer and his reading in the outdoor studio is 23mph.
The conditions are tough and this can create huge swings up and down the leaderboard later.
