Carlo Ancelotti’s men struggled in attacking ideas in a rare European defeat against a Ligue 1 side
At one point, Real Madrid had to lose a dramatic European match. On Wednesday night, it finally happened, a poor Los Blancos side falling 1-0 to a very impressive Lille – their usual Champions League magic was nowhere to be seen.
It was a signature performance from the home side, who were organized at the back, clinical at the right moments and at times riding their luck to see off the Spanish giants. Los Blancos, meanwhile, were bereft of ideas and intent until late on – and simply couldn’t conjure up a goal.
Endric came closest for Madrid early on, breaking into the defense before seeing his close-range effort well denied by the goalkeeper. Lille also had a good chance, but the injured Thibaut Courtois was denied by Andre Lunin – Jonathan David’s free header.
David made no such mistake on the stroke of half-time after Eduardo Kamavinga handled the ball inside the box.
Los Blancos left it too late to make it. Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. didn’t have many chances until the final minutes to come close. Kylian Mbappe – with 30 minutes remaining – also provided attacking ideas, but Lille could not break the goal.
These games rarely happen in Madrid. There is usually a late goal or dramatic moment. Only this time it didn’t go well.
