Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga: Live round updates

Canelo Alvarez vs. MMA Fighting. Edgar Berlanga LIVE round-by-round updates from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., to one of the most anticipated boxing fights of the year. Saturday night.

Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2) has won four straight fights and is competing for the second time this year. He defeated Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision last May.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0) knocked out Padraic McCrory in the sixth round last February in his only appearance of 2024. All five of his fights prior to McCrory were decision victories.

Next up is Canelo Alvarez and Edgar Berlonga.

Following the singing of national anthems, the soldiers are about to enter.

The challenger steps in and here comes Canelo.

Referee Harvey Dock is on hand to oversee this title bout.

Round 1: Canelo and Berlanga start patiently, neither fighter wants to make the first mistake. Punches from range are deflected by gloves. Canelo lands a right to the body. Canelo blocks a couple of punches and comes forward with a combination. Berlanga leaves a clean counter. Canelo cuts off the ring and sweeps Berlanga in the corner as the challenger backs away. Another punch by Berlanga. Canelo scores with a short left and a brief win. Canelo lands a jab.

Round 2: Berlanga probes with the jab and Canelo doesn’t give him much to work with. Canelo with a couple hard body shots. Berlanga answers with straight punches, but Canelo corners him again. Great talk by Berlanga. Left hook from Canelo. Berlanga complains about being in the back of the head, but Doc tells them to continue. Canelo’s quick 1-2. The hero slips down. Short right of Berlanga. Canelo presses with that jab. Berlanga tries to punch out of his corner and Canelo scores as he circles. Fun round.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 20-18 Canelo.

Round 3: Canelo is back on offense. As he chases Berlanga he lands, however Berlanga fires back. A left hook out of nowhere puts Berlanga on his back. He quickly responds to the count, but is he cured? Canelo presses the advantage and he lands a big uppercut inside, then another right. Berlanga hangs tight. Canelo right hand to the body. He is all over Berlanga. The challenger survived the round, but it was too big for Canelo.

MMA Fighting Round 10-8, Canelo. Overall, 30-26 Canelo.

Round 4: Canelo lets that jab fly free and he scores and follows up with a body shot. As Berlanga backed into the corner, he clung to his stick. Another jab-body combo from Canelo. Canelo with a hard right. He did not show much respect for Berlanga. Berlanga chills against the ropes with a right hand. Berlanga tries to sneak in a right but can’t get past Canelo’s guard.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 40-35 Canelo.

Round 5: Canelo takes the center of the ring. He’s content to let Berlanga’s jabs land harmlessly against his gloves. Canelo lands a jab and a left hook. Dock should step in as the fighters hug and start throwing body shots while grappling. A Canelo right hand to the body. Berlanga is left alone, staying in the pocket with Canelo. Big rip in Canelo’s body, Berlanga hits him 1-2. Canelo gives Berlanga zero room to breathe. Clean jab from Canelo.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 50-44 Canelo.

Round 6: Canelo effortlessly walks Berlanga down without throwing a single punch. Nice uppercut inside by Berlanka. However, Canelo comes forward. Berlanga was stooped, but active. Canelo sticks that umbrella in his face. Another right to the body by Canelo. A right hook scores for Berlanga. Canelo with an uppercut-body shot combo. Left hook tags perlanga. Canelo takes the action back to the corner. Job lands for the champion, who has started a shutout thus far.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 60-53 Canelo.

Round 7: Berlanga is aggressive with his jab. He drives left to the body. Right jab to Berlanga’s face. Dock should step in to warn Canelo after an apparent low blow. Canelo dropped a hook to the body. Berlanga won 1-2. Nice jabs by Canelo. He joins the Left Front. Get by with a couple Berlanga jabs. Bad moment when Berlanga hits the mat hard following a wild slip. A sheepish laugh from him upon waking.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 70-62 Canelo.

Round 8: Berlanga catches Canelo with a right hand. Canelo back to body work. Canelo’s left hook fails to pick Berlanga’s face. Berlanga with a 1-2, but he eats two hard lefts to the body for his troubles. Another left to the body by Canelo. Canelo with a pair of solid counter punches, right hook for Berlanga. Doc calls for a stoppage warning Berlanga about the nod, but Canelo connects with a hard punch before the referee can separate them. Right uppercut from Canelo on the reset. A Canelo right hand lands. He lands body shots at will.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 80-71 Canelo.

Round 9: Canelo uses that right hand to get around Berlanga’s defense. Big right by Canelo. A 1-2 connects Canelo. Berlanga should wake up here. Berlanga and Toke’s rabbit punch pauses the action, but to no avail. Canelo is loose as Berlanga walks down. He actually looks a bit stupid. Berlanga rifles in a few jabs to straighten Canelo, but that exposes Canelo’s offense. Berlanga can’t stop being cornered. Canelo finishes the round with a combination.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 90-80 Canelo.

Round 10: Let’s go back to the corner. Deja vu. Canelo hits Berlanga with an uppercut. Berlanga goes to the body, then fires up for a 1-2. Nice short left by Berlanga. Canelo breaks Berlanga’s body. The champion connects to anything he wants. Right uppercut by Canelo. Three straight punches by Canelo, Berlanga didn’t deliver much here. Berlanga talks trash, not sure why. Canelo continues to maul him. Canelo drops his guard to the sound of a 10-second round of applause and Berlanga literally hits him. A weird moment.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 100-89 Canelo.

Round 11: Canelo get out early. They fight. Canelo fights like he wants a finish and Berlanga thinks he can get one more. A left hook hurts Berlanga, but he’s back there a few seconds later. Left hook to the body, Berlanga complains and Canelo seems to agree that it’s a little low. Back in the corner, Canelo goes for a headbutt and Berlanga kicks out. Canelo cracks Berlanga with a stick. They trade punches near the end of the round.

MMA Fighting Round 10-9, Canelo. Overall, 110-98 Canelo.

Round 12: Canelo rallies the crowd to start the final round. He ramps up the pressure and punches a bold Berlanga. It seems like every Canelo gets a jab out. Right hand lands to Berlanga. Straight right to the body by Canelo. Defense has become secondary for both. Canelo not letting go. Berlanga eats punches without a care. Berlanga offers to end the fight, and Canelo meets him to put the cap on an entertaining—if upside-down—scratch.

Official result: Canelo Alvarez def. Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision (117-110, 118-109 x2)

In his post-fight interview, Canelo scoffed at critics who said he was avoiding fighting younger opposition. How proud he is of fighting for his people on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

He tells Berlanga that he is a great fighter and to keep working.
