US Open Round 3 live updates, leaderboard: Bryson DeCambeau runs to 3-shot lead in dominant outing at Pinehurst

We started Moving Day leading the US Open Rookie.

Pinehurst no. Bryson DeCampo made a dominant run at the other end of the field while clearing 2 all night.

DeChambeau ran away with the third round Saturday afternoon in North Carolina. He shot a 3-under 67 and built a ridiculous four-shot lead over the rest of the field at one point as everyone else slipped away. He will enter Sunday’s final round with a three-shot lead as he hunts for his second US Open victory.

DeChambeau will play Mathieu Pavon, who finished 1-under 69 on Saturday. Rory McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major in nearly a decade, is 4-under for the week. He was briefly in the mix on Saturday, but he bogeyed twice in his last four holes to fall back. He will line out with Patrick Cantlay in the final group, marking their first time playing together since last fall’s Ryder Cup.

Hideki Matsuyama is fifth at No. 2 for the week. Ludwig Aberg, who started the day with a one-shot lead, had a brutal triple-bogey on his back nine and finished the day 3-over. He will go with Matsuyama. Tyrell Hutton and Tony Finau are tied at 1-under and are the only other golfers with par heading into the final round.

On the other hand, top-ranked Scotty Scheffler struggled once again. US Open golf, he said, is like a “mental torture chamber.”

long live48 updates

  • Michael Campbell won in 2005, for what it’s worth.

  • Bryson DeChambeau finished with a 3 shot lead

Bryson DeChambeau birdied the 18th, giving him a 3-under 67 on the day. He enters Sunday at 7-under with a three-shot lead over the field.

  • McIlroy vs. Cantlay rematch

Well, this paring should be a lot of fun on Sunday after all the chaos in Rome.

  • A pace for 18

Bryson DeZambo didn’t waste any time. He booked it to the 18th tee, teed off almost immediately, and his drive went left of the fairway. Let’s see how it turns out.

  • Bryson extends his lead again

Bryson absolutely travels. He bounced back with a birdie on the 17th, his sixth, and has regained a three-shot lead.

  • Bryson throws the spears again

Yeah, that twin didn’t shake Bryson. He stuck his tee shot on the 17th to within a few feet of the cup to set up another birdie appearance. Unbelievable.

  • Bryson returns two

Well, that changes things. Bryson DeChambeau made double bogey after a tough chip at No. 16. His lead was suddenly only two shots with two holes to play.

  • Rory’s day is over

Rory McIlroy’s day is over, and it’s hard to imagine he wasn’t disappointed. He made two bogeys in his final four holes and missed two good birdies en route to his 1-under 69.

As it stands, he’s four shots behind Bryson DeZambe.

  • Bryson’s lead continues to grow

Bryson’s lead continues to grow. Rory McIlroy bogeyed back in front of him to fall back to 4-under. So trying to get up-and-down par at the 15th, DeChambeau’s lead is now an incredible four shots.

  • Another Bryson bird

Bryson DeChambeau starts running with this thing. After a tough drive he sank another birdie putt which pushed his lead to three.

The fans at Pinehurst love it, too.

  • Bryson’s lead is back to two, Åberg triples

Bryson made a great birdie at the 13th, but he missed the cup. He returned to an easy par – but with Rory McIlroy ahead of him, Bryson’s lead was back to two.

Ludvig Åberg, on the other hand, is now out of it. He tripled just 13 times, which was tied for fourth today Five scenes Again. Brutal.

  • “Don’t scold me, I’m sorry.”

Bryson couldn’t give the crowd what they wanted, and he descended into the bunker.

Of course, it worked for him.

  • Rory closes the gap

Rory McIlroy is now tied for No. 1 after a huge tap-in birdie at No. 14. We could be looking at a Rory-Bryson final pairing on Sunday…

  • Rory didn’t go

Rory McIlroy is hanging in there. No. A big par save on 13 keeps him at 5-under for the week, which is still two back of Deschamps.

  • Bryson pushed his lead to 2

    Yes, Bryson DeChambeau is good.

After working on his hips and hitting his longest drive of the day, Bryson sank his second straight birdie. His lead is now 2.

  • Bryson DeChambeau is working

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau was getting some work done before the 11th.

And then he hit the longest drive of the day, because of course he did.

  • Leaderboard update (again) after Rory’s latest birdie.

It’s getting harder to keep up. Rory McIlroy joins the 5-under group, no. He sank a birdie putt on 12. It was his second birdie in the last four holes.

Bryson DeChambeau may be in the lead, but there’s plenty of golf to go on Saturday. Let’s take a look at the top of the leaderboard.

    Leaderboard

    1. Bryson DeChambeau -6 (10)

    T2. Matthew Pavon -5 (13)

    T2. Tony Finau (11)

    T2. Rory McIlroy (12)

    T2. Ludwig Aberg (10)

  • DeChambeau plays solo lead

Ludwig Åberg misses his eagle putt on the 10th and will settle for birdies. That gave him a share of the 5-under lead … which lasted about 30 seconds.

Bryson DeChambeau took his own ridiculous approach to the greenside bunker and took the lead for a birdie at 6-under.

  • 278 to 6-iron

Bryson DeChambeau had already hit a 6-iron on the 630-yard par 5 to 257-yards. A 6-iron from 257. Alas, he hit it 256, a yard short of clearing the greenside trap.

  • Ludwig crushed the number 10

Ludwig Åberg hit on perhaps the best approach of the day. He nailed his second shot on the par-5 from 10 to 9 feet with a 7 wood! mad man

    Their faces say it all.

If he sinks that putt, he’s back in the lead.
