The Masters 2024 LIVE: Leaderboard and latest updates, Bryson DeCambeau sets the pace

Bubba Watson's daughter Dakota makes it past The Masters

Bryson DeZambo set a round pace at The Masters as LIV golfer topped the opening day leaderboard at Augusta National. Coming off a big win in the first men's major of the year, DeChambeau shot a superb 65 on a course that has enjoyed limited success in the past.

Leading the chase was Scotty Scheffler, who continued his impressive performance with a smooth 66 to finish at six under. The PGA Tour's dominant player and 2022 green jacket winner came to Augusta looking to add a second Masters crown to his collection and produced a typically composed and confident round.

The start of play was delayed by two-and-a-half hours after morning storms, and when the rain cleared, the wind presented challenges throughout. The soft surfaces allowed players in control to score relatively freely, however, with plenty of top golfers leading the way. Rory McIlroy signed off on a 71 after a slow start, while bogeys on the last two holes left defending champion John Rahm at one over. However, the surprise of the day was Danny Willett – playing his first tournament since shoulder surgery six months ago, the 2016 Masters winner produced a beautiful 68 to cap off another impressive weekend on the immaculate Georgia course.

Five-time winner Tiger Woods got off to a solid start after saying he was aiming for “one more green jacket” to take him to 16 major titles despite being in pain from most of his shots at Augusta. He and several other players will complete the first round on Friday after the light faded forcing Thursday's play to be cut short.

Sergio Garcia: Masters opening round like going '12 rounds with Mike Tyson'

Former champion Sergio Garcia felt “like he went 12 rounds with Mike Tyson” after the opening round of the 88th Masters.

Garcia was three over par with six holes remaining following a double bogey on the par-three 12th, but posted level-par 72s on the 13th, 15th and 16th.

“It's very tricky, not just because of the strength of the wind, but also because of the fury,” said Garcia, who beat Justin Rose at Augusta National in 2017. “Everything you do on this golf course, every shot on the greens has to be very accurate. Not just on the tee, off the tee, but on the greens.

“When it's windy like this, when you don't know if it's five or 30 (miles per hour), it's very difficult. I felt like I hit a good shot. Ryan (Fox) hit a pitching wedge on 12 to about 15 feet to the middle of the green.

“I hit a nine iron and I was 15 yards short of him. I caught a big wind and made double bogey. It was challenging, that's for sure. I feel like I went 12 rounds against Mike Tyson. I'm looking forward to going home and relaxing.
