Washington Wizards head coach Wes Anselt Jr. will move to a front office consulting position, the team announced Thursday.
Anselt has compiled a 77-130 record since being named head coach on July 17, 2021. The team picked up an option on Anseld's contract for the 2024–25 season in October.
“I am grateful to serve as head coach of the Washington Wizards,” Anselt said in a statement, “and I look forward to this new opportunity to work for the continued improvement of our organization.”
The team said late Thursday it would name an interim head coach and conduct an extensive search for Anselt's replacement in the offseason.
“After many thoughtful conversations with Wes, we determined together that a change was necessary in the best interest of the team,” Memorial basketball president Michael Winger said in a statement. “Wes embodies the qualities we value at our company, and his extensive basketball experience will be an asset to the front office as we move toward our long-term goals. We are grateful for his continued contributions to our organization and community.”
The Wizards are 7-36 this season, ahead of the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings.
