LONDON – A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan early Sunday morning, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake, centered about 30 kilometers (18 mi) north-northwest of Herat, followed a powerful aftershock that killed more than a thousand people.
“Three M6.3 earthquakes occurred in the days preceding this earthquake,” the USGS said. A statement. “One M6.3 occurred on October 11th and two other events occurred on October 7th within 30 minutes of each other.”
Sunday’s quake was recorded at a depth of 6.3 km along the same fault planes that struck the four most recent earthquakes, a report from the USGS said.
