UNC-Chapel Hill: A faculty member has been killed in a shooting on campus, and the school says a suspect is in custody.

A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty member was shot and killed on campus Monday afternoon, and the suspect is in custody, a school official said.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced the “all clear” Monday afternoon, hours after police responded to an “armed and dangerous person on or near campus,” the university said.

The all-clear alert came after police sent out an alert asking students to stay in the area around 1 p.m., later adding that there was a suspect.

UNC police said they are looking for a “person of interest” and advised people to keep their distance. It is not known why the man was wanted.

University police have advised all students to go inside immediately, close windows and doors and wait until further notice. A witness at the compound told CNN they were locked in their building and saw armed officers searching the premises.

A spokesperson for the university declined to comment further on the incident. Calls to the city of Chapel Hill were not immediately returned.
